Schools face a challenge — how, when children connect to the school internet in educational institutions, to protect minors from prohibited and harmful public information: pornography, violence, tobacco, alcohol, drugs and the like. Internet and television provider Etanetas offered schools an innovative solution, which is already used by more than 20 educational institutions in the Vilnius region. This solution allows schools not only to protect students but also to save significantly.

Why protecting children cannot be merely formal

Children are curious by nature, yet they still lack the critical thinking to assess threats. According to data from the Communications Regulatory Authority of the Republic of Lithuania (RRT), in 2025 the "Clean Internet" hotline received as many as 3,518 reports about content that is prohibited to disseminate or has a negative impact on minors online. That is 62% more than in 2024.

As Etanetas CEO Artur Stefanovič states, in schools the protection of children from unwanted information cannot be merely symbolic — it must prevent dangers before they reach the student's screen.

"Harmful content — from gambling advertisements to violent content — can have a negative impact on children. If a student at school can bypass the protections with just a few clicks, it means the safeguards are not working. Good internet protection is when the student has no possibility of accessing harmful content, and teachers do not have to act as police officers and constantly monitor what children are doing on their screens," says A. Stefanovič.

A solution that allows schools to have a high level of security

Etanetas offered a solution that fundamentally changes how, from a technological standpoint, students at schools are protected from harmful content.

"Our solution allows content filtering to be carried out not on school servers but in our network, using next-generation firewall technology. This means that all of a school's internet traffic is checked before it even reaches the institution. In its functionality this technological solution is in no way inferior to the market leaders, yet, as our analysis shows, it is more reliable and allows educational institutions to be offered a far more attractive price. Schools no longer need to worry about purchasing expensive equipment, configuring it or providing ongoing technical support — our system does all the work. This means educational institutions can not only ensure the highest level of security but also save. Our system automatically restricts access to harmful visual and audio material, communication apps and unwanted web pages," says A. Stefanovič.
